Inspiration
My art piece is a variation of a piece by Rafal Rudko of a bedroom. The dominant color was blue, and the effect on the piece was astronomical. It portrayed feelings of sadness, solitude, and gloominess. The floor also had a reflective quality, which added to the gloomy atmosphere. I wanted to test that if I just changed the dominant color, would the feelings the painting evoked change. I chose to use green and yellow for one because they are flamboyant colors. I also attempted to add the effect of light, which the original painting lacked. After finishing my painting with green and yellow as its principal color, I changed to purple and blue. I did this to compare the two paintings. It was astounding how different the evoked emotions were. The second painting was more despondent. I really liked this contrast. My final piece had them side by side so that this contradiction could be observed.
In my piece, I placed the antique chair as the focal point of the painting. I really enjoyed painting the chair. It could be said that the chair became of value to me. In my original plan, my valuable object was the focal point. I feel this symbolizes the significance of my object. It was always in the background and was never my true treasure. The strange thing, however, is that it was valuable to me in the sense that I relied on it to keep my valuable objects safe. In the same way, I placed my object in the background, but as my pillow. The pillow represents the fact that I rely on it and trust it with everything, and it is where I place my head. It was in relation to the poem I wrote earlier on, “Metallic Pillowcase”. In a way the depth perception of my painting said the most about me.
The artistic technique I used was mainly wet-on-wet with sharp outlines. This was a very effective procedure to portray the attributes of light. I used gold and silver metallic marker to highlight the objects that are meaningful to me. I really enjoyed making these pieces. This is one of the first experimentations with watercolor and I would like to continue with it. However, I would like to try out another medium, such as pastel, charcoal, or acrylic paint. I am still unsure about my theme for my works, but for this piece, it is security. The theme is security because I feel safe with that object in my life.
